The Living Seed Bank Working Group curates the seed library, caring for donations to ensure we preserve our rich genetic diversity and maintain the viability of locally grown seed.
How It Works
The Working group commenced in 2022. We usually meet weekly, packing piles and piles of seed packs while enjoying good coffee, food and conversation. Our tasks cover the gamete of seed care, including:
🌱 Ensuring donations are cleaned and treated if necessary (ie beans are frozen)
🌱 Correctly labelled, including date of collection, name of grower, location grown, cultivar and if possible, variety name
🌱 Stored in a temperature controlled storage Unit.
🌱 Prepare seeds for sale by printing sales labels, packaging seeds into envelopes ready for distribution at swaps or markets
🌱 Screen any out-of-date or unlabelled seeds to go in the ‘free seeds’ box
Get Involved
The library team meet most Tuesdays 10am-12pm at the Canberra City Farm in Fyshwick. Although we sort and pack seeds, it is a very social gathering with tea, coffee and cake. We would love you to join us if you can! If you’d like to join a Seed Library session on a Tuesday morning, just come along at 10am to the CCF LESS Building or email us for more details 😁
